My Photo-Gastronomic Adventure: Melaka

The third smallest state in Malaysia, after Perlis and Penang; Melaka has been famous for its long history and rich culture. It is also the birthplace of South East Asia's first fusion cuisine known as the Peranakan. Two weekends ago, I was there for a 3 days 2 nights Photography and Food Trail.

Not all dishes get to be featured on my blog. Below are the dishes worth mentioning:

Photobucket
Nyonya Laksa from 88 Jonker St; a cross between Singapore's Laksa and Malaysia's Curry Noodle and Tuna. *I know PC, who doesn't eat fish will not be very excited with this dish. I kinda like the blend of fishy tuna smell with the sinfully aromatic coconut gravy.

Photobucket
Chendol from 88; served in a cute little traditional chicken bowl.

Photobucket
Penang Laksa; my all time favourite laksa. I had this at the coffeeshop opposite 88. What's unusual was the strips of fried omelette on the laksa.

Photobucket
Popiah and Chicken Candlenut (I have the photo but it didn't turn out well, so I decided to feast your eyes with just the popiah) from Nancy's Kitchen along Jalan Hang Lekir. It is also accessible from Jonker Street.

Photobucket
Nyonya BakChang from a little bakchang shop along Lorong Hang Jebat... and guess what I had for dessert? :D

Another dish worth mentioning is Chicken Rice Ball from this corner Kopitiam along Lorong Hang Jebat, recommended by CSS (hahaha). This kopitiam serves only chicken and balls. I decided not to upload the picture because it might remind you of something else.... something round and soft.

Tatsuya Japanese Restaurant - Park Hotel

I know I have not been posting any entries - for those who have been staying tune, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! (I know there is at least one. YS - I'm referring to you). If you're wondering "What happened to her?... the answer is simply.. procastination. I am getting on my feet again now....

I stumbled upon Tatsuya; nicely tucked along Bideford off Orchard Road one lazy Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Park Hotel. D and I ordered their set lunches; with price ranging from $25 to $35 per set.

The succulency of the flown-in-from-Japan sashimi and food cooked to perfection were just marvelous. I personally enjoyed the silky smooth chawanmushi. There are tiny little bits of basil sprinkled on the sashimi and the chawanmushi giving them a unique hint of freshness.

Photobucket

Well, Tatsuya is a place to visit if you are looking for non-fancy back-to-basic Japanese food.

99cents Sushi @ Nihon Mura

Photobucket

Expect nothing but nothing extraodinary. At Nihon Mura, all sushi on the conveyer belt are priced at 99cents per plate. There's also tepanyaki, ramen, steamboat, sashimi and a wide range of desserts - the dishes are all labeled on ice-cream sticks.
 Photobucket

To order food..
  1. Collect the ice-cream sticks from the counters
  2. Place them into the container on your table
  3. The waiter takes your order according to the ice-cream sticks
  4. Waiter returns ice-creams sticks to the counters
  5. Waiter brings your order to the respective counter
  6. Chef prepares your food
  7. Waiter serves the food
Photobucket

I can't help but wonder if they can take step 2 to 6 away and let their customers place order at the counter. This way they can save on resources and lower the price of the sushi to maybe ... 69cents per plate?!
